This paper research in the practical barge transportation with big and heavy cargo. Analyze and conclusion is made to the particular of this type of vessel when investigating the overall longitudinal strength of different type of caisson less than the length 190m. through the direct calculation for model ships and a series of concept ships, abstract the direct standard for barge overall longitudinal strength and conclude the basic requirements for the number of longitudinal bulkheads in structure design for different rate of particular barge. Finally, bring this theory into practice.The barge less than 190 meters can be divided into seneral kinds based on their particulars. Ultimate figures can be chosen to design some model ships and start with scantling design. First, define the number of watertight bulkhead by the means of overall length and longitudinal bulkhead by difference of B/D. Then, calculate the local strength and overall strength according to the rules. At last, the type of frames and main support scantling to be defined.Next step is direct calculation to middle ship section. We mainly concern about the result of ship center with the stress distributing of strengthen deck and bottom. Focus is made to the elements with high stress which is looked as a great distribution to the overall longitudinal strength.Finally, the check to the type of structure frames. We check the reasonability of frames by means of changing the type of longitudinal and transverse bulkhead.Furthermore, research the relation of maxima crushing pressure of barge bottom with the ship speed.
