A Study On The Guidance Of Urban Design In Hongkou District

Presently, urban construction in China is experiencing the transition from "quantity-pursuing" stage to "quality-pursuing" stage. How to make an integration of all urban resources to carry forward advantages and overcome shortages, and also to promote the city vigor and efficiency has already become a hot issue of everyone's concern. By the mean time, we have also to consider deeply how to create a beautiful, pleasant, hygienic and characteristic urban environment in good condition of both function and space, in order to enhance citizen's living quality and to promote a better urban development. In such a background, urban design becomes the most often used method to achieve the goals mentioned above.Hongkou, a center district of Shanghai, plays an important role in the city's future, and the city function and spatial structure in this region is changing dynamically. For the purpose of resolving the consequence of this situation, urban design is often used as a powerful means. This dissertation elaborates the basic concepts of urban design and its goal and design procedure. And also try to clarify the difference and relation among urban design, urban planning and architecture design. By the other hand, this dissertation also analyzes the superiority and contradiction in Hongkou's future development, and proposes an urban design strategy for Hongkou district according to its status quo and developing target. Based on the studies above, the most important work is to indicate the city area that needs urban design, in an attempt to provide a brief guidance for the design work in the near future.
