Research On City Piaza Planning And Design Guidance

Urban plaza is the city’s most vibrant open space and precious treasure whichconnected human and nature together. In contemporary China, accompanying therapid urbanization and humanities concerns, the design and research of urban plazahas significant meanings. Because of its unique social and historical backgroundand national status, the planning and construction of urban plaza in Beijing hasbeen in a number of issues.The thesis adopts research strategy from the classification research to thesystem elements controlling research as follows: classifying the urban plaza inBeijing into different hierarchy (chapter I); studying different cases of urbanplazas’ public space in and abroad China (chapter II); summing up planning anddesign problems of urban plaza based on the survey of urban plazas in Beijing,Shanghai and Qingdao (Chapter III); establishing the planning and design guide ofurban plaza in Beijing through guiding the design different categories of urbanplaza from system to elements (Chapter IV).Based on related theoretical and case studies of urban plazas in and abroadChina and combining the spatial and cultural characteristics of contemporary urbanplazas in Beijing, existing problems have been investigated thoroughly in fivemonths’ survey period. Under the guiding ideology of “Diversification, regionally,culturally and territoriality”, graphics mode of urban plazas have been drawn fromsystem to elements. According to the three layers “should be, could be, should notbe” in plaza design guide line, the balance of flexibility of design and effectivecontrol has been achieved, which largely encouraged the generation of betterplanning between buildings and surrounding public spaces.The main conclusions of this thesis are as follows:1. Researching on the origin and development of urban plaza and drawing theconclusion of the direction and trends of urban plazas;2. Discussing on different classification and hierarchy of urban plazas inBeijing to highlight their differentiation;3. Emphasizing on prominent characteristics of urban plaza planning anddesign in Beijing;4. Exploring the core of urban plaza design guidelines in Beijing, whichestablished based on the guiding and limiting the classification of plaza, from theoverall design organization to special control of design elements.
