The Development Of City Centers Of International Metropolises In The Process Of Globalization

In the process of globalization, cities are drived into a pyramidal city system. The leading international metropolises are the cores of the global or regional economy, performing the management and control function. The city centers are the global functional cores of the international metropolises, which reply the needs of globalization, face the contest outsides, keep the leading status in the world.Five international metropolises are chosed to be the cases. They are the city centers of New york, London and Tokyo, which are the global international metropolises, and the city centers of Paris and Singapore, which are the regional international metropolises. London and Singapore are the two main cases. In the case studies, the economical and spacial development of the cities are reviewed firstly. Then attentions are paid to the development of the city centers and the paper studies on the two aspects of the construction characters and the development experience.After the case studies the paper summarizes that: fristly, the city centers of the international metropolis have a character for its integrated economical structure. The producer service works as the dominated industry and at the same time the other sevices such as the retail, tourism, creative culture and the recreation sevices are playing more and more important roles. Secondly,in the spacial field, the city centers of the international metropolis expand in three kinds of ways and have some new features which are different to the other cities. Thirdly, looking through the developing process of the city centers, the paper gets that, the continuing developing and changing process is to meet the needs of the globalization, and diffenrent emphases are put on the development. Recently the international metropolises are trying to construct more integrated city centers, which contain wilder fields and multiplicater functions. The central activity zone, replacing the traditional centers and the CBDs, is the new developing form of the city center. At last, the paper gains some valuabal development experience of city centers of international metropolises.In the end of the thesis, some suggestions on the development of the city center of Shanghai are brought out, such as reforming the city center structure, advancing the economical function, improving the transit networks and ect.
