Compared with the development of modem landscape design in western countries, where it experienced more than one hundred years, it's clear its counterpart in china just started at the end of last century. However, something changed nowadays. With prosperity of economy and enhancement of environment protection consciousness, it got a rapid development that never happened before. Meanwhile, its content and style saw a great change.Based on the developing curve of Chinese traditional landscape and modern opening space, diversity, ecology, function and art would be the trend of landscape design and requirements of times as well. Generally speaking, from the perspective of style, there are two main design directions in china: one pays too attention to Chinese tradition and "natural view", under their constraints, design work doesn't match people's needs today, what's more, it is without modern spirit; the other is fully attracted by western design style and simply imitates its external elements. Unfortunately, it ignores landscape design's specific geological and Chinese cultural characteristics.Focusing on cultural diversity and refusing simple imitation will be the primary question of modern landscape design. In the new era, landscape design should contain multiple aspects: respect to tradition and pursuit of creation, Chinese culture and global development, etc. besides emphasizing on local characteristics by absorption of spirit of Chinese traditional landscape design, for example, method, space layout, style, elements and culture background, To reach harmonious space of people-nature, modern landscape design should conquer the tradition design's shortcomings, which include its functional disadvantage and negative culture aspect, follow the development of culture, make full use of new material and technology, and establish necessary theory frame. Furthermore, taking the elements from Chinese traditional and western modern design would be also the important component to create impressive, innovative, stylish design work with Chinese specific characteristics. According to the developing sequence, the essay concentrates on recording and analysing two main landscape design systems: Chinese classical landscape and western traditional landscape. Writer studies and compares the difference of these two systems from the perspectives of philosophy, natural aesthetics, space and style as well. Meanwhile, writer exemplifies many famous landscape design works, and combines applications of numerous art thoughts from 1970s including Earth Art, post-modernism, etc. At the end, writer concludes the appropriate direction of landscape design should have a blending background of ecology, diversity, art, and local characteristics. The aim of this essay is not to depict design history and collect information simply. Instead, writer attempts to understand the overall profile of current landscape design development, and finds a good and appropriate design direction that fits Chinese local culture.
