The paper mainly introduced distribution automation, especially RMU(Ring Main Unit) monitoring terminal concept, its function reqirement, development in the future, and the background of the project as well. RMU monitoring terminal based on TI's 32 bit fixed point DSP TMS320F2812 and CANopen communication protocols was described in detail. The design idea, hardware structure and sofware blocks were discuss in detail. Important hardware shematics and software flow charts were given in the paper.The monitoring terminal has simple hardware structure, reliable performance, and can collect, calculate and analyze the analog data and digital data in real time. It can also diagnose the error of elctrical network, record the dynamic process of the errors reliably, precisely detect the error circuits and rapidly isolate the error, which has realized 3R function. The special design of harware and relevent sofware made it possible that the system can precisely messure the values of voltage and current in the circuit. In addition, the system can communicate with other substation via asynchronised serial ports based on national standard 101 protocols, or CAN bus ports, which has met the mutiple communication requirements in distribution automatic system. The main design idea and how it was realized was described in the paper.The paper also discussed how to design RMU monitoring terminal' s CAN bus blocks using on-chip CAN block of TMS320F2812, how to design the software based on CAN bus protocols and European standard CAN protocol-CANopen protocols, and how to use the system in the paper and distribution substation to build the ring main electrical system.
