With the development of distribution automation system, higher demand is put forward in dealing with the monitoring and the recovery processing of distribution network. Feeder Terminal Unit is the fundamental control unit of Feeder Automation, it play an important role in the improving of quality and reliability of distribution network.In this paper we analyses the function of FTU, including measuring, controlling, protecting, communication, etc. at first, and provide the main technical index of the device. Then we confirm the hardware frame structure of the device and systematic scheme of software. On the hardware design we provide the operation principle of the main function module and design content in detail, including Analog Inputting, Digital Inputting and Outputting, Watchdog, etc. On the software design we adopt C and assembler language to program, design a simple real-time multi-tasking system as the core, divide the systematic task module concretely, and give different PRI according to the nature of the task. This not only meets the requisition for strong real-time character of the power system but also raises the flexibility of the software system greatly. The task module designed mainly includes: data acquiring, data processing(FFT), protection and communication. We also design EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility), on the basis of analyzing the mechanism and approach of Electromagnetic Interference, we take some measures pointedly from the hardware and software separately.On successful basis of FTU exploitation, we have developed Hefei University of Technology distribution automation experiment system, this system extended the knowledge of special field student and has made the student have the perceptual cognition to power distribution automation.
