In recent years, China is vigorously developing western inland navigationto promote the economy of the western regions. A large number of inlandnavigation facilities are being or will be constructed. Thus the issues of thefilling and emptying system adjusting to high head or superhigh headnavigation lock on the mountain rivers such as type selection, layout and itsrelated hydraulics will become the research focus of the current and futurenavigation hydraulicsThe application of interior energy dissipater in the filling and emptingsystem of navigation lock is studied for the first time in this paper. The basiclayout principles of the interior energy dissipater in the navigation lock's fillingand empting system are indicated. On the basis of analyzing the dissipationprinciples and the hydraulic characteristics of various typical interior energydissipaters, the drop shaft interior energy dissipater is adopted, the specificform of the filling and empting system with drop shaft interior energy dissipaterand the methods to determine its main controlling dimensions are studied. Onthese bases, the layout of this new filling and empting system is been put upfor the YinPan single-stage navigation lock on WuJiang River which has thethird high water head in the world. The mathematical models for the new fillingand empting system are been established, and the hydraulic characteristics ofthis new filling and empting system are been analyzed in detail by the physicalmodel experiments and the mathematical models, the mathematical modelsare also been validated to be enough reasonable and accurate. Comparingwith the test results of the same lock's conventional filling and empting system,the advantages and disadvantages of this new filling and empting system arebeen analyzed. And the in-deep research direction in future is been pointed outin the end of this paper.The research results indicate that the layout of the drop shaft intedorenergy dissipater provides a stable and sound working condition for the valves, and most of the water energy is dissipated before entering into the lockchamber. Therefore, the flow and berthing conditions in the chamber are wellameliorated, the layout of filling and emptying system in lock chamber can alsobe further simplified.The filling and emptying system with drop shaft interior energy dissipatercan better meets the characteristics of China's western mountain rivers, it is anew layout type of filling and emptying system for the high head and superhighhead navigation lock. The achievements in this paper can be used forreferences for the design and construction of the high head navigation locks inChina.
