To meet the requirements of environment protection and energy conservation, the hybrid power vehicle has been developed rapidly as the transition of fuel-combustion vehicle to electric vehicle. However, there is no much focus on large number of motorcycles which have low displacement. Referring to the success of hybrid electric vehicles, a hybrid motorcycle system is feasible, which will play an important role in saving energy source and reducing drain. The drive power of the hybrid motorcycle consists of engine using LPG fuel and four traction batteries. This paper is mainly about the traction battery management system. The traction batteries can be charged by a normal electric bicycle charger, a 50W solar panel or a wheel hub brushless DC motor. To make sure the batteries output maximum power and have enough life-span, the battery management system is a vital part. So the performance of batteries is analyzed thinking of the electric drive system and different running conditions. On the base of the analysis, the control strategy is decided and a controller of battery management system is designed with microcontroller Intel 80C196KC. The DS2438 smart battery monitor is used to measure the parameters of each battery and a hall voltage sensor is used to sense the voltage of battery pack. In addition, LCD module is designed to display all the data. When the voltage/SOC(state of charge) of some batteries is lower that the average, solar charger or the DC motor is used to charge it due to the weather condition. When the motorcycle is running, solar charger is used to charge the battery pack and make sure the equalization of battery pack. The program debugging and the running experiment demonstrate that the theoretical analysis is correct, and the control strategy is feasible. The controller is cheap and simple with excellent performance. This paper present a battery management system with an easy-handling, clear human machine interface, which can improve the performance of battery pack effectively. All the researches in this paper present the basis on both theory and experiment reference for next stage work on whole vehicle energy system for hybrid motorcycle.
