Today, new energy source and power of vehicle is been researched in many countries'automotive industries. On the other hand, there is no much focus on large number of motorcycles about this because of its low displacement. Referring to the success of hybrid electric vehicles, a hybrid motorcycle system is feasible, which will play an important role in saving energy source and reducing drain.The drive power of the hybrid motorcycle consist of engine using LPG fuel and wheel-style brushless DC motor, however here only the electric drive system is introduced in detail. It's very important to select and match two kinds of power, which to enhance the performances of driving, fuel consumption and exhaust emission. In this paper, to find motorcycle's requirement of power and torque, firstly the dynamic performance is analysed thinking of different running conditions and structure of the motorcycle. On the base of the analysis, the control strategy is decided.Base on the character of brushless DC motor and motorcycle, the controller of the electric drive system is designed with microcontroller ATmega16L integrated with A/D, PWM output, which is suitable to control motor. The control is realized through three phase inventor composed by MOSFET and its driver IC. In addition, LCD module is designed to display the running status of the motorcycle. Base on above some analysis, the system software thinking is presented to improve capacities of the motorcycle like dynamic, fuel consumption etc., and battery condition is monitored. The software is composed by modules of motorcycle start, speed tuning with PID corrector and display.The running experiment of the motorcycle demonstrates that the theoretical analysis is correct on running condition, and the control strategy is feasible. The controller is very cheap and simple with excellent performance. All the researches in this paper present the basis on both theory and realization for next stage work on hybrid motorcycle such as power matching.
