In modern power system, increasing the designed capability of transmission line and advancing the stability of power system becomes demanding; On the other hand with the development of modern power electronic technology, nonlinear loads' impact and imbalance increases the reactive power loss and depresses the end voltage. The transmission of a great deal of reactive power necessarily results in reduction of using efficiency of power energy and severely effects power-supply quality. It becomes necessary way that reactive power compensation devices are installed in electric network to meet the reactive power need due to these problems.People say Thyristor Controlled Reactor TCR for short, which is popularly used in reactive power compensation field nowadays. In fact, it's one of Static Var Compensation equipment. Because its compensation characteristic is superior to the in-phase motor and parallel connection capacitors or other traditional equipment of reactive power compensation, also, considering its characteristic and price together, it's fit for the situation of China. So it has been extensively used in the power system in recent years.This paper introduces the meaning, the methods, the developing state and some other aspects of reactive power compensation first, then analyzes the TCR's structure, the mechanism, the dynamic characteristic and harmonic and some other electrical characteristics; Confirms the control method and system model through compare which is suit for TCR. Designs a suit of TCR which bases on the singlechip. The equipment's core part is P89V51RD2, whose periphery circuit includes the inputting and regulating of measure signal, the in phase triggering, the communication and the alert parts; Also, after researching how to improve the characteristic of the equipment more, the author puts forward the blue print helps to improve the harmonic characteristic after validating the effect. From the researching on electrical characteristic, the realization of control system function, to the improvement of capability, impenetrated the physical experiments and the simulation of PSCAD, insuring the veracity and objectivity of the research.
