The traditional townships, as a representative type of township in China, have obvious features and profound culture in terms of spatial form. This thesis attempts to analyze the essential features of spatial form of the traditional townships with a new perspective, and study how to create modern features by inheriting the essential characteristics of spatial form of the traditional townships. This thesis first examines the developing pattern and the composing characteristics of the spatial form of the traditional townships, and. generalizes the common features. Then, it draws an analogy to the micro-structure of porous material, and establishes the concept and image model of porous structure of traditional township spatial form. Finally, it explores the modern sustaining mechanism of spatial porous structure of traditional townships. The author uses typology and various spatial analysis approaches in the thesis. This project not only provides theoretic guide for the preservation and sustaining of the space of traditional townships, but also offers suggestions for constructing modern townships with characteristics of traditional spatial form. This thesis is composed of five chapters:Chapter 1: Preface: The author introduces the background, contents and approaches of the project.Chapter 2: The development and features of the spatial form of traditional townships: It studies the relevant factors and historical stages of the development of the pattern, and analyzes the differences of various levels. It analyzes both the elements and structure, and defines the superficial and underlying culture, and generalizes the common features.Chapter 3: Porous structure-analysis of the traditional township space: It introduces the reason, purpose and meaning of the project, and explains the origin and composition of the porous concept. Furthermore, it analyzes the porous structure of traditional township space, and explores the underlying meaning of porous structure.Chapter 4: The modern continuity of the traditional township porous structure: It analyzes the differences between traditional and modern spatial form, and the sustaining prerequisite of the traditional spatial features, and puts forward the modern sustaining model of porous structure of the traditional townships with the example of Mudu town.Chapter 5: Conclusion: It generalizes the stages and steps of the project, and explains the significance and the limits of the thesis. The thesis contains about 53,000 words and more than 130 charts.
