| Pumped storage plant is an effective measure to adjust peak, fill the valleyand enhance efficiency and reliability for electrical power system. Pumpedstorage machines are a very important part of pumped storage plant and theresearch on its starting characteristic has always been a key problem. Severalstarting models for pumped storage machines are available for power plant:auxiliary motor starting; asynchronous starting; synchronous back to backstarting; static frequency converter starting; semi-synchronous starting, of whichback to back starting is the commonly backup used starting model, and the staticfrequency converter (SFC) starting is the most popular one at present.In this paper, the development of both domestic and foreign pumped storageplants, pumped storage units, starting study of pumped storage machines areintroduced firstly.According to the back to back starting process mathematic modelsummarized in existing papers for pumped storage machines, the model machineis simulated and calculated, and the variation rules and curves about statorcurrent, rotational speeds, field current and electromagnetic torque are givenduring back to back starting.In the existing papers about the SFC starting of pumped storage machines,all damper bars are equalized to one circuit. It is not convenient for the analysisof currents in each damper bar. In this paper, the mathematical model of multi-circuits is established considering actual arrangement of the damper bars basedon the multi-circuits theory of the electrical machines. On the basis of thismathematical model the process of static frequency converter starting wereanalyzed in detail.
