With much more concerns on the rights of the disabled in the whole society, Barrier-free design has been becoming a hot spot in the academic circles, since the UN put forward the definition of "Barrier-free surroundings" in 1974. As the disadvantaged group, the disabled need more attention. However, with the features of large scales, complicated functions and the principal buildings in an area or a place, the public buildings are required to achieve much higher and harsher design level. This research is defined as the study on the Barrier-free design in the broad sense, i.e. Barrier-free design not only meets the basic needs of the disabled physiologically, but more important, spiritually. According to the present investigation on the group and the analysis and research on the characteristics of their physiology, psychology and behaviors, we come to the concrete requirement on this design. On the basis of the present policies and regulations and the research fruits home and abroad and combined with architecture, sociology, psychology, ethics and human engineering, we conclude the principles and methods of Barrier-free design. Meanwhile, the author illustrated corresponding examples to explain the specific basis, principles and methods for the Barrier-free equipment. In the end, in the light of the research achievements and practical experience, the author gave the decisive conclusion on the paper and raised some explosive and constructive suggestions.
