With the increment of submarines and the enlargement of their battle radius each year, the loss of submarines will become more and more, so there is a strong requirement for better submarine rescue system. At present, deep submarine rescue vehicle (DSRV) is the primary measure for submarine rescue and ensuring, and therefore the research on joint and its engineering system is very important. The paper introduces the intelligentized joint and the process of submarine rescue, and then presents a formal safety assessment method for its engineering system. With the method, the safety of the system is assessed in following steps: hazard identification, risk assessment and risk-centered maintenance.Fault tree analysis, analytic hierarchy process and experts'estimation are used in the hazard identification. To overcome the difficulty in getting statistical probabilities of the initiating events, the paper proposes a fuzzy fault tree analysis method. Using experts'estimation and fuzzy sets theory, the fuzzy failure rates of the initiating events in the fault tree is derived, and then fault tree analysis (FTA) is done qualitatively and quantitatively. So the problem on getting probability is solved successfully. The paper takes the interfacing manipulators'fault tree analysis for example to describe the new safety assessment method summarily.A risk assessment system based on fuzzy-logic system is used to assess the engineering system. It introduces the theory of fuzzy-logic system, and presents a fuzzy-logic model to risk assessment for engineering system on the basis of national standards and rules. When the useful data of hazard identification and experts'experience are used in risk assessment system, the risk level of the engineering system as well as its weakness is derived. Following, the paper give an example to demonstrate the risk-centered maintenance.Lastly, the paper discusses the formal safety assessment method for engineering system and its application briefly.
