With the development of huge electric power grid in China, the scale and structure of power grid construction, especially the planning on sending power fron west to east, North-South supplementation and nationwide interconnection are coming into being, and more and more new electronic power devices are applied in the grid, Thysistor Controlled Series Compensator is one of the important member of them, having a lot of advantages in improving performances of power systems. It is estimated that there will be 1000~1200 kVar series compensation devices to be applied in the country's grid in 2010. So, it is very important to perform studies on the protective relay of the series compensated system and it is also the primary developing direction of the ultra high voltage transmission line protection. This paper introduces the development of simulation platform of series compensated power grid and the research on protective relay characteristics.Now, in the research on the simulation of protection and control schemes of series compensation system, the models of nonlinear component and compensation device protection are ivory-towered, the inner taches of line protective relay are neglected, and information about relay operations couldn't be send back into simulation system, so it can't consider the effect of the protection system for series compensated device. To avoid these disadvantages, the paper builds the simulation platform with the transient, close-loop and quasi-realtime character according to the demand of actual engineering project. This platform integrates the model of power grid, FSC- TCSC with their controllers and protections, as well as line protective relays, it can realize the exchange operation, and can fulfill the engineering demand of the study on series compensation line protection.Using the TCSC power grid and protective relay characteristic simulation platform, the demonstrate researches about the TianPing series compensation project and YiFeng series compensation project are present in the paper. The TianPing series compensated parallel transmission lines are the first thysistor controlled series compensated transmission lines in China, and the YiFeng parallel transmission lines will be the series-compensated transmission lines with the highest compensation degree in China. According to the given engineering project, the paper analysises the character of the protective relay, gets the engineering results and presents some operation advice. The conlusion are used in protective relay operation and project design.
