Generally, a large machinery device has a complicated structure and a great amount of sub-parts which leads to heavy design. So the parametric design to a large device is always difficult. According to the investigation of the author, the internal parametric research on the subject is mainly theoretically and feasibly. And there are few practical parametric systems internal, especially in the construction machinery area.To solve the problem, a parametric design method which based on Solid Edge ActiveX Automation Technique is advanced in the project. And some advanced design methods such as VRP, CAD and parameterization are involved in. Besides, some typical problems are solved during the research, such as the prompt research for a sub-part, the independently locating of a part, the mirror operation of a sub-part, the automatic creation of engineer drawing and the arrangement of standard parts.Quayside container crane is a fully developed construction machine, which has methodic frame, explicit design and also, an urgent need for new types. In the article, the structure of the container crane is introduced as well as its key dimensions. And the last part of the thesis is composed of a description of a parametric design system for quayside container cranes. With the system, designers can modify the crane model promptly through controlling of the parent-key-dimensions, which brings fewer burdens, shorter period, less cost and more profit.
