China is one of the developing countries which come into aged society early and has the largest aged population in the world. As the first city that comes into aged society in China, Shanghai is facing a more serious situation of aging population. At present, the aging situation in Shanghai has reached the average level of developed countries. Without a wholesome system provided for the aged, there are many problems for supporting the aged.Rest homes in communities are the commonweal organizations which developed greatly after the renovation of the aged supporting pattern in China. They are efficient complementarities for the national aged supporting system. However, there still are more improvements to be made for the immature pattern of community resthome.The dissertation briefly states the tendency of aging in China and the present situation in Shanghai at first, and afterwards studies the successful patterns for supporting the aged all over the world. There are three basic studies about the aged included: physical feature, psychological feature and behavior pattern. Investigation about the buildings in Shanghai supporting the aged is the next important part. Based on all above, the dissertation focuses on the existing disadvantages of the community beadhouses, and explores ways to improve. Since the shortage of economic support ability in China, economical ways or methods are the considered with priority.At the end of the dissertation, there is an expectation about the residential pattern for the aged in Chinese cities based on the studies of the community rest homes, with the prospect that the disquisition can help improving the living situation for the aged in cities.
