Product family design method is due to the mass customization, and the common product platform is the key technology of the family design method. To set up the accurate platform, it becomes a significant phase of the whole course of the product family design. At first, paper introduces the elementary theory of extension logic, and combines with the popular knowledge-representation. It analyzes the extension knowledge-representation model combined with qualitative and quantitative. It builds the extension model for the product family design. The paper uses the extension clustering method to set up the platform of the product family design. By dividing the parts of the product into groups, the platform is established. The paper adopts the method of distance function of the extension theory to form the whole clustering method. And it could see the extension clustering method is more adaptive than common clustering method by comparing the results. The example proved the feasibility of the raising method further.According to the importance of the demand of the customers, the adaptable function is introduced. The adaptable function is used to evaluate the current platform, If the value of the adaptable function is less than zero, then the extension transformation method is used to solve such design problems. The paper has been using the method in the family design of the product of electric drill, and it could see the better efficiency by applying such method. At last, utilizing all the proposed methods, it brings out a prototype system of product platform with development software UGNX4.0 and VisualC++6.0. Also it explains its main function , structure and realization steps of each module.
