Being the first institute that aimed at the development of modern arts education, the Bauhaus was established in the year 1919, Germany, which started the epoch of industrial design education. With its advanced idea, practical and realistic attitude and integrated teaching system, the fundamental education of Bauhaus laid a basic foundation for the education of modern arts and enlightened present education of art.The research object of this paper is the fundamental education of Bauhaus and its preliminary courses, aiming at unifying arts and technique, tries to bridge the gap between"arts"and"industry". Starting with the problem between arts and technique, the paper analyzes first the influences on predecessors by the teaching ideas in fundamental education of Bauhaus. And progresses achieved by the Bauhaus are demonstrated in this chapter. The third chapter illustrated the three stages in the development of fundamental education of Bauhaus according to different primary ideas in teaching. And influences from internal and external environments are discussed in this part. In the fourth chapter, detailed analyses were done to the content, the main idea, their teaching methodologies and the success they have achieved, to explain how to unify arts and technique in preliminary course.In the end, combining experiences accumulated from architecture preliminary course with researches and studies by author, the paper tends to find the deficiency of arts education in China and some solutions to these problems are also put forward.
