As the most economic logging tool for servicing horizontal wells, the Well Tractor has being attached great importance to. It has already used for logging, perforation and salvage etc. in horizontal wells, so it will have a good future. At the foundation of having analyzed the principium and process of electromagnetic clutch well, the paper made the research for the clutch more perfectly applying the method of optimal design of machine and simulation of VPT (Virtual Prototyping Technology).When using the method of optimal design of machine to optimize the clutch, the paper accomplished the work as follows. First of all, it has introduced and analyzed the principium and process of the clutch. Whereafter, it has built the physical model and mathematic model for clutch. Finally, it has programmed in MATLAB Optimization Toolbox to optimize the structural parameters and the parameters of spring of clutch, got the results and even analyzed the capability of the clutch before and after the optimization. Through the optimal design, it is succeed in developing the capability and reducing the volume of the clutch.When applying the method of simulation of VPT, the paper has accomplished the work as follows. First of all, it has introduced the process of applying Pro/E and ADAMS to simulate. Whereafter, it has built the three-dimensional model of clutch in Pro/E, and transmitted it to ADAMS. And then, it tested and validated the virtual prototyping and performanced the dynamic simulation, got the very important data of the simulation and analyzed the dynamic capability of the clutch. Moreover, it has proved that the optimal design for the clutch is right by the simulation.
