Adobe is an old kind of building material, gradually; the modern building material and structural style replaced the traditional residential housing. But the implementation of the earthquake safety project in rural residential housing of Yunnan province puts the adobe and rammed earth rural house on the government agenda. Different from the other masonry material, there are special mechanical characteristics of adobe masonry, but there is no correlation of test standards or specifications, so it is necessary to make a further experimental study on the basic mechanical characteristics of adobe masonry.Rural is a weak link in the fortification against earthquakes. Without housing design and construction management, the capability in earthquake resistance of the building is poor. The earthquake damage in the past showed that the earthquake caused serious damages to the rural housing. Based on the data of Ning'er earthquake on 3rd June, the paper gets the seismic damage index of different structural styles and earthquake intensity, describes the damage of rural housing, analyzes the cause of Ning'er earthquake, and points out the strengthening or reconstructing technical measure according to the Technical Criterion of Yunnan Province's Earthquake Safety Project (Tryout Edition).The test of a single adobe characteristics shows that the intensity of flat press is higher than the intensity of stand press and lie press. It also shows that the single shearing strength is close to the double shearing strength, and the flexural strength is very low. At the same time, this paper describes the breaking character of adobe, protracts the Load-Displacement curves of adobe, and analyzes the effect of the pine needle and adobe quality on the mechanical property of adobe. Through the cube pressing experiment, this paper gets the compression strength of slurry.The test of adobe masonry is the focus of this paper. The test shows that adobe masonry has tensility failure characteristics at the vertical load. Based on the outcome of the test, we establish firstly the average formula of compression strength of adobe masonry, fit the stress-strain curves of compressing of adobe masonry, and for the first time put forward the expression of the ascend curve sect. The paper also gives the elastic modulus expression and the Poisson's ratio of adobe masonry. The shearing strength formula based on the strength of slurry is brought forward, the factors affecting the adobe masonry is analyzed, the feasibility of the flexural test method of masonry is analyzed, and the flexural failure characteristics are described in this paper. At last, the friction coefficient for adobe masonry is defined for the first time, and the friction coefficient value simultaneity is gained.The test of adobe wall shows that the vertical load has no obvious effect on the horizontal load, but under a heavier vertical load, the walls behave some characters of shear-press failure. At the same time, the test of adobe wall also shows that friction has a major effect on the mechanical property of adobe wall, and the adobe walls incline at the end of the test.
