Saying from a certain perspective, architecture is a materialized society, especially the residential buildings, both the individual building and the group building are a comprehensive outcome of sometime's politics, economy, culture and technology. Shanghai is one of the earliest Chinese opening cities to accept the western civilization completely, along with the appearance of various architectural styles, vehicles, reactions... Shanghai turned into a modern commercial and trade metropolis gradually. Shanghai Li-nong architectural design during the period of Republic of China has witnessed clearly an eastern-western combination in residential architectural cultures and technology at the time they met. Research of Shanghai Li-nong architecture in this period can help us to understand much more vividly the combination between China and the western in the course of the development of Chinese modern design, and also the characteristics of the times while the alternation of new and old world.Based on its prosperous history background, this dissertation discussed development factors of Shanghai Li-nong architectural design in the period of Republic of China; styles and characteristics of Li-nong architectural design; residential culture in Shanghai during the period of Republic of China; and then probed into the history significance of Li-nong architectural design. And grounded on different stratum of inhabitants, space layout of architectural design, architectural decoration together with the relative facilities, this thesis emphasized in research of various styles of Li-nong housings during the period of Republic of China, reflected the residential conditions of different stratums and their livings, and extended the research deeply into the inter-actions andrelationships between the design and the society.
