Carlo Scarpa

Carlo Scarpa is one of the greatest Architects in 20th architectural world, his works are always commented as poetic of space. He showed his talent not only in architecture design, but also in glassware and exhibition design. In his life, he devoted himself at tempering form and material, artisan and tradition, history and felling, geist and thinking; he also kept researching a balance solution between history and future, tradition and modern tectonic. This great architect, however, has not received enough attention in China. Research concerned still remained undone. Under this condition, this thesis conducts a research on Carlo Scarpa. On the basis of visiting and surveying of Scarpa's works and conclusion of western research, it aims to reveal the special way of Scarpa's design and show its use for reference. The thesis is composed of three parts: I. it shows out the cultural background of Carlo Scarpa, the art and tradition expressed in his correspond works. II. By anglicizing his thinking in design, tectonic and spatial expression; reveals his method to revival of historical tradition. III. On discussing his influence on western architects, show his positive meaning.
