Line losses theoretical calculation and reactive power compensation are important components of distribution system management, and they are both efficient methods to reduce line losses and to improve the quality of voltage. In this paper, combining with engineering practices in our country, depth research and discuss have been done about these two problems. In this paper, according to actual situation of 10kV distribution network, traditional methods to calculation line losses have been compared and researched, and the primary difficulty in improving the veracity of losses calculation of distribution networks has been analyzed. The viewpoint that sorting the load nodes as real-time-info nodes, month-info nodes or capacity-info nodes depending on the different information of the load nodes has been issued, and use them to complete the integrity of information the calculation needed in distribution networks. The abundant measurement information of the root node are also took full advantage of in the method. Then based on forward-backward method, node's load modified by losses, power flow calculation per hour in the calculation day has been proceed, which add up the energy loss results in the whole day, and calculate the loss in the month and the year.In the field of active power compensation, this paper proposes a method of reactive compensation based on the flow calculation in view of the 10KV distribution network. Because of actual operation of the distribution network, three load's ways which are the maximal, the minimum and the general one are considered. Under the minimum load's ways, initial compensation scheme, included initial compensation sites and their capacities, is decided with the methods of the conventional flow calculation and reactive quadric accurate moment for the purpose of decreasing the net loss. According to the voltage qualified rate, the initial compensation scheme is adjusted to improve the voltage qualified rate. Through the iteration, the overall voltage qualified rate achieves to conform with the request. Finally, it's tested on experimental systems and the results are satisfying, which confirm the reasonableness, efficiency and practicality of presented method.
