In recent decades, with the development of power electronic and the increasingly maturation of large-power AC motor variable frequency speed control technology, the ship electric propulsion technology shows its advantages in civil and military ship little by little and becomes the development trend of future ship power plant. the ship electric propulsion system has great breakthrough in mobility, reliability, efficiency and promote the power and other aspects. with the ship's electric propulsion technology applications constantly expanding, ship electric propulsion system has shown broad prospects.The electric propulsion ship has good performance in some aspects, such as maneuverability, handling, flexible layout, space saving, economy and security. So, the application field of electric propulsion technology has been expanding constantly. It is also widely used in conventional large and medium-sized ships except for icebreaker, the dredger, exploration ship, ferry outside and showed a good prospect. However, the development of electric propulsion ship in China has beenslow because of not enough study for the characteristics of motor and propeller in electric propulsion ship, especially for lacking of management experience in electric propulsion ship.Based on the above facts, the research has been conducted in the following aspects:Firstly, study of the ship's electric propulsion motors, the propeller and the characteristics of the motor and propeller.Secondly according to the characteristics of the motor and propeller, taking the Azipod for an example, this paper analyzed the features of handling and management in the pod propulsion and put forward some corresponding management measures.Thirdly as the electric propulsion system existing secondary energy conversion and the higher initial investment in equipment, the paper conducted its economic analysis and pointed out the various factors, which influenced economic performance of the electric propulsion ship.In this paper, the basic research for the electric propulsion system is expected to help the owners and designers to make the right decision and analysis and promote the domestic application of the ship electric propulsion. At the same time, it is helpful to guide the crew to operate.
