The special assembled vernacular house pattern results from the particular geographical and natural environment, people oriented environment, regional ecomnimes, social development and changes, and social backgrounds. After a mass of fieldwork and survey, with abundant materials and information, this thesis attempts to make a careful study on settlement layout, space structure level, public space analyses, and the influence of settlements by traditional culture and regional environment. It concludes that the quadrangle dwelling with the courtyard as its core is the most typical vernacular building, the space structure patterns of which seem very mature. It also points out that the main room of the house and the courtyard is the most crucial pair of the space forms of vernacular buildings: the main room constitutes the core of culture and the courtyard the core of space. This thesis thoroughly analyses the process of the population migration and shaping up as well as the cultural background of the regional society, and discusses the mutual relationship between the patriarchal organization together with the family life and the villages together with the buildings where the clansmen live. It also makes an attempt at revealing the essence on a deeper level from many aspects. It manages to establish the dynamic research system about Ningbo's vernacular building in order to master its evoluting law of the occurrence and development.The thesis attaches importance to how settlements use, coordinate and protect the environment as well as the ecosystem. It also puts forward a new thinking of sustainable development in the construction of the human-living environment. In conclusion, it puts forward the author's personal standpoint of the innovation and development of the local dwelling architectural culture under the modern living conditions; it combines the ancient with the modern; it indicates a link between space and time. In short, the paper tries to provide the enlightenment and the train of thoughts for modern construction design to create a beautiful and comfortable living surroundings with the characteristics of Ningbo.
