Facing the developments of historic cities, the contemporary constructions affect the landscape of historic cities. Historic urban landscape is a theory considering to the authenticity and integrity of the Heritage through the entire urban landscape. The conception of Historic urban landscape was put forward in Vienna memorandum in 2005, which includes the guidelines for conservation management and urban development of the historic urban landscape. Different from the traditional terms of "historic centers'', "ensembles" or "surroundings", historic urban landscape is a key statement for an integrated approach linking contemporary architecture, sustainable urban development and landscape integrity.Continuous changes may be acknowledged as part of the city's tradition. Historic urban landscape is a stratification of previous and current urban dynamics, with interplay between the natural and built environment. Contemporary interventions should not compromise existing values derived from the character and significance of the historic urban fabric and form. Special care should be taken to ensure that the development of contemporary architecture in historic cities is complementary to values of the historic urban landscape. The conservation management and urban development of the historic urban landscape is useful to the conservation of historic cities in china. Considering the characters and status of urban landscape of historic cities in china, the thesis discusses the conservation planning and planning guidance from three aspects: conservation of the natural environment, conservation of the historic urban fabric and form, the design of the contemporary architecture in historic cities. The process of revising the conception of Historic urban landscape is put forward by UNESCO. We should pay attention to the further development. New planning methods, planning managements and public participation are the working emphasis in the next step.
