Basin as the birthplace of human civilization land has been the intensive human settlement areas. According to the investigation, Shanxi Province now has about 55 ancient villages and small towns which still keep their characteristic styles, they mainly distribute in the Qinhe river basin, the Fenhe River basin, and both banks of Huanghe River valley. The Space of villages and towns are the most direct-viewing reflection of traditional settlements, as well as the carriers of all towns and villages functional activities .It is very urgent problem needed to solve that how ancient villages of Middle Qinhe can not only satisfy the needs of modernization, but also continue and inherit characteristics of the original features in development, this is also the significance of this paper topics.This article is one of the series of studies to the ancient villages and small towns in Qinhe river basin, take ancient villages and small towns space in the middle area of Qinhe river reaches as research object.First take the natural environment, regional economic background, social and human environment characterized as the basis of research, From various aspects to explore how space of traditional settlement in Qinhe middle generate, including geography, climate, people and land, iron coal resources, commerce, Rites, beliefs ,defense and so on .Based on the previous study, carries on the analysis of the ancient villages and small towns space shape in the middle area of Qinhe river reaches in big spatial environment. According to its own characteristics, separately from the boundary (surface), the skeleton (line) and the symbol (point) aspects to analysis. Finally carries on the analysis of interior group territory space of the ancient villages and small town's space.
