With an increasing demand for environment protection, energy saving, and reliability of the vehicles, the engine control technology is becoming more complicated, so the cost of electronic control unit (ECU) development increases and the ECU design is more time-consuming. In order to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost for the development of ECU, this thesis studied and developed a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation system for ECU design. In this paper, the principle of engine electronic control system and the characteristics of ECU are studied. Then a design method of hardware-in-the-loop simulation system for engine control is proposed. The system consists of two parts: Host PC and slave-computer.The Host PC includes the engine model and the software environment. The slave-computer provides the necessary signal connections and gathering of sensors and actuators for ECU.The study is composed of three parts. First, after research and analysis of engine performance, the engine model is set up. And then build the model with SIMULINK. Second, the software environment achieves the visualization interface between the user and the system. Furthermore, data analysis, signal acquisition and communication are realized under software environment. During software programming, the object-oriented method and 32-bit technique of WINODWS are used. A number of languages such as Visual Basic, Visual C++, Microsoft Access, each of which has its own merits, are available for developing GUI, data communication, database, and so on. The engine performance can be got through the software environment calling the engine model by Matlab interface. Third, tests are carried out to improve the system, and applications of the system to a new ECU's development are conducted. The experimental result showed that the engine ECU HIL simulation system is effective in the development of ECU, which can simulate the engine's working process and can check the ECU's controlling strategy and working conditions.
