Increasing market competitions require manufacturing enterprises to have faster and better response in product design and manufacture. Combining with the diversified character of large and heavy hydraulic press products, the method of adaptable platform design is introduced into the designation of hydraulic press product on the basis of study on its function and structure. How to apply the principle of adaptable platform on the design of hydraulic press is also studied. Hydraulic press product model is constructed and its performances are analyzed, and a further exploration on parametric product platform design. The knowledge of the hydraulic press design has been acquired and establishment and application of the hydraulic press product module database have been completed.The main contexts are as following:1) The present research state of hydraulic press, the adaptable design and relevant technology, the research objectives of the KBE and the method of knowledge acquisition based on rough set has all been presented. The content and significance of the research are brought forward.2) The principles of adaptable platform design of hydraulic press are studied, including the principles of adaptable design, the concept of the adaptable product platform, the expression way of adaptable product classified levels and the way to describe the configuration design of adaptable product family by mathematics. The expression way of the hydraulic press design knowledge and the basic method of rule extraction are also discussed.3) The modeling process of hydraulic press's adaptable product is studied. First, based on the characteristic of hydraulic press, the product family is analyzed, the structures of hydraulic press are classified and then parameterization modeling is carried on. In the end, two cases are used to make evaluation of hydraulic press performance.4) The establishing process of parametric product platform of hydraulic press is discussed. In a case of slider's product family, the special variable and universal variable of parametric product platform are confirmed by variational analysis. Using optimization methods, platform parameters are also confirmed and the results of optimal design are analyzed.5) Knowledge of the hydraulic press design has been acquired from the statistic data by the support of the knowledge acquisition theory based on rough set.6) The hydraulic press product module database has been established based on CAD/CAE software and its exploited tools. Also, one case of adaptable product design is given to help to explain in details.Finally, summarized the research work for this paper, assumptions for further research is put forward.
