| Traffic jam has become a serious puzzle currently for many large cities at home and abroad to cope with. In China, plenty of well-equipped intelligent transportation control systems have been introduced from abroad and popularized in large cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Nanjing, etc. Although those systems are rather advanced, limited by the factors such as the infrastructures and the fund invested, they are not fit for being adopted in medium-and-small-sized cities, and they run expensively. In addition, a few researches have been carried out on intelligent traffic signal control in medium-and-small-sized cities. With the National Experimental Zone of Coordinated Reform on Rural Areas and Cities in Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality established, the urbanization process of Chengdu city and its surrounding satellite cities has been facilitated rapidly. Driven by the economic development, the traffic capacity of these satellite cities (such as Shuangliu County and Wenjiang City) has increased swiftly and some city roads are confronted with traffic congestion at peak hours. Consequently, in the case of insufficiency of the fund invested in transportation infrastructures and out-of-date traffic signal control devices on city roads, there is an urgent demand to find out a solution to deal with such traffic congestions in medium-and-small-sized cities. The paper begins with investigation on the status quo of segmentation of traffic signals at intersections in downtown Wenjiang, surveying in detail the traffic organization in the downtown area. By processing and analyzing the traffic data collected, major factors which result in traffic jams have been found out. Then employing VISSIM, the simulation software, to optimize the strategies for signal control, traffic channelization and release at intersection, and link-up of carriageway with intersection, the paper puts forward control strategies for solving traffic jams at intersections in Wenjiang city so as to accomplish speed-regulating control in section and ease traffic jams at peak hours at intersections. |
