At present the preliminary ship design in China still widely uses two-dimensional drawing design methods, which is using the line types and rules in ship mapping methods to express the hull structure. Used as a design means of years, two-dimensional drawing design modeling method is fast, easy to build the model with high efficiency. Especially before the detail design stage, it will be the main design mean of the preliminary design stage in a longer period of future, because of its obvious advantages relative to the three-dimensional modeling methods. But the shortcomings of two-dimensional model are quite clear. The built models are not intuitive, include the less available information, can not be directly used for various ship design and calculation. For example, the repetitious labor such as drawings of various forms of similar components and the openings, the calculation of the weight and the center of gravity, the statistics of materials, calculation of sections module, etc, are a lot in the ship design. To reduce the intensity of the work, increase the efficiency and quality of structural design of ships, it is necessary to study how to achieve structural information and structural calculation rapidly by the secondary developed program.By reading the relevant information, comparing the similar ship design software, studying the inner / outer data structure of AutoCAD model, combining the practical experience in ship design, and using the software system developing knowledge, thereby the author developed a set of section module calculation program based on AutoCAD. This paper from the program, described some problems and their solutions for the second development applications of ship design software by using AutoCAD and Visual Basic from 3 aspects of mathematics model, database architecture and interactive design. The main problems are:1. What the internal and external data structure is and the use characteristics of the data interface. How to access to the structural information from the 2-D drawings through the added definition of 2-D ship drawing.2. How to create a relational project database which contains sufficient ship structure information, least information redundancy, efficient query and statistical calculation, to preserve the right full detail information of ship structure, and to exactly achieve the different requirements of the calculation and statistical summary.3. How to ensure that the user input data is correct and improves the efficiency of the user's data input as far as possible, and how to generate the output results and support the user to complete the calculation report.
