As the third generation of light source, High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamp is widely used in the illumination for roads and bridges with its merits such as high luminous efficacy, long duration, etc. In today's society, power energy is in short supply, the research on HPS and its related energy saving device is a very urgent task both in the view of social and economic benefits. Recently, with the implementation and development of Green Lighting, the demand for high efficacy lighting products is expanding day by day.At the beginning of this dissertation, the operation principle and electric characteristics of different gas discharge lamps, i.e. fluorescent lamp and HID lamp, are introduced. Then this dissertation emphasizes on the design and simulation of a universal PSPICE model of HPS-Lamp Electrode Model, which can provide theoretical basis for the research and implementation of HPS energy-saving method.In the process of choice of scheme, this dissertation analyses different types of lighting fixture in common use and comes up with an energy-saving scheme based on AC voltage regulator with chop control. After the feasibility study of AC voltage regulator with chop control, this dissertation describes the whole framework of the energy-saving system and designs the hardware system, which contains the main AC voltage regulator circuit, the dive circuit of IGBT, the load voltage and current detection circuit, etc. Experimental results show that this HPS energy-saving control system works effectively on energy-saving and has little harmonic pollution on power grid.
