In recent years, with the rapid growth of vehicle's owed quantity in the world, which causes a series of problems, such as traffic congestion, traffic accident, discharge of automobile and so on. In order to increase efficiency of traffic, ensure the safety of road traffic and make people's outgoing be convenient, many people dedicate to research ITS (Intelligent Transport System) and apply it into road traffic.As the last tache of ITS, Vehicle Navigation System is also the kernel tache, which integrates Global Satellite Positioning Technology, Geographical Information Systems, Technique of Database, Multimedia Technology, Modern Communication Technology and Embedded Computer System, to realize vehicle orientation, vehicle navigation and real time information issuance, and to help driver to reach the destination exactly, safely and rapidly. With the rapid development of automobile industry and the great demands to intelligent transport, it is very important that Chinese exploit the Vehicle Navigation System to meet the situation of our country.In order to meet the demands of Vehicle Navigation System's characteristics such as small volume, low power consumption and dependable performance, this paper designed the Embedded Linux Vehicle Navigation System based on S3C2440A, built the corresponding hardware platform and software platform, in order to realize the position search of vehicle navigation system and the search of the optimum path. In conclusion, this paper includes the following aspects.(1)Deeply research the function and structure of intelligent transport dynamic information platform, and supply the whole design structure of the embedded vehicle navigation system according to the function which is the platform needs vehicle navigation system to realize and the performance index which the system needs, such as low price, low power cost, high credibility, and so on. We used embedded micro-processor S3C2440A with 32 bits from Samsung company to set up system hardware platform and made use of Linux operation system to develop the vehicle navigation system application.(2) Based on the performance structure of the S3C2440A chip, found the whole frame of the system hardware platform. According to the system performance, design models for memory module, GPS module, GPRS module and periphery interfaces in this frame.(3) Set up the development environment of Linux operation system, complete BootLoader transplant, realize it's transplant on micro-processor S3C2440A, and finally do some research on program design and development of vehicle navigation system.(4) One innovation of this paper is that the vehicle navigation system we designed is distribution tache in the dynamic transport information platform. Through GPRS communication, it can supply real-time dynamic information, search the optimum path and furthest realize the share of the transport information resource.(5) Another innovation is to choose S3C2440A chip to found system hardware platform in full consideration of cost and performance. It reserves multimedia interface, camera interface, audio-frequency interface, and network interface, and so on, to enrich the functions of the vehicle navigation system.The Embedded Vehicle Navigation System designed in this paper has been debugged and the results indicate that it can meet the demands.
