In natural language understanding, the understanding of the adjectives plays a very important role. This paper describes that the natural language understanding of adjectives is applied to the mechanical product design, by understanding and analyzing the user needs which are expressed through a natural language form and converting the final results of the analysis into the conceptual design requirements, the subsequent design is supported.This paper first introduces research situation of natural language understanding at home and broad, discuss the classification and refinement and the ambiguity problem caused by adjectives; According to the characteristic of natural language understanding, the knowledge-based method should be adopted in Natural Language Understanding which is applied to mechanical product design. Knowledge description and representation system in semantic analysis of adjectives was built based on conceptual dependency theory. Next, on the basis of the property of adjective the semantic analysis of adjectives can be done, the viewpoint that the adjective has the epitaxial and the adjectives model of detailed understanding is proposed; And the related rules of semantic analysis of single-syllable adjectives which is used as attributive in mechanical field has been proposed according to the adjective function. Other situation is only discussed. At last, the natural language understanding model of adjectives is applied to mechanical transmission in the area of needs analysis, through debugging, the system runs well.
