With the expansion of power grid and the increase of the transmission voltage grade, the status of relay protection in power system is becoming more and more important. The performance of relay protection has an important influence on the security and stability of power system, so it is necessary to study detailedly and master the operating characteristics and the specific work process of the relay device.The development of microprocessor-based protection technology improves the performance of the protection device greatly, but the microcomputer relay protection device is different from the traditional one, mainly in the complex data calculation, invisible operating characteristics and work processes, no middle the results and so on. When fault occurs, the operator can only get the fault recorder chart, the protection device event log, the fault messages and other information to make accident analysis manually based on experience, so currently there is a very inconsistent situation which is "automated information gathering, artificial information analysis". There is inevitably ex-parte analysis, determination errors, etc., and it is difficult to make a comprehensive, complete, objective judgment of fault characteristics and protection judgment and operation.This paper presents a simulation analysis method of microcomputer protection devices and their operation characteristics using software and develops corresponding software system. The system takes the fault data and software simulation data as the data source to simulate the operation interfaces, protection algorithm, and action logic commonly used in computer protection devices while providing an abundant analysis tools in fault information processing. The system makes a visual processing of the work processes and operation characteristics within computer protection equipment in the form of software, so that it can not only have access to intermediate results, but also make analyses and comparisons of operation characteristics of protection devices under different fault conditions and operation characteristics of different protection components or devices under the same fault conditions, which provides a powerful tool for the deep understanding in the operation characteristics of microcomputer protection device, the protection device performance evaluation, and carryout of failure analysis.After a brief introduction of the background topic, significance and research status, this paper explains the overall design concept and software architecture of the virtual microcomputer protection devices and their operation characteristics analysis and evaluation system, discusses the achievement methods of the various main modules, and then the analysis of fault information processing algorithms and the protection operation characteristics algorithm involved in software development are analyzed in detail, focusing on the protection configuration, software interface, and action logic of the virtual microcomputer protection device module. Finally, the software functions are briefly introduced and example analysis is carried out combined with on-site fault data.The results show that the results is accurate, the logic is correct, and simulation analysis conclusions are consistent with the field devices which can fully satisfy the operation characteristics of computer protection equipment and field failure analysis, etc., and it can also meet the education and training needs.The system uses object-oriented technology and database technology, and takes Microsoft Visual C++ and Microsoft Access as the development tools, using C++ language, and debugging through the Windows XP environment.
