With the expansion of power system, power devices are constantly upgrading. Relay protection is extremely important to ensure the security and stability of power system. Protection devices are becoming increasingly complex, create a high demand for power system personnel. Therefore, technical training for power system personnel to improve their skill level of operating and maintaining the protection devices become power companies and training centers’urgent demand. At present, computer simulation has become a common means of professional training for power system operation personnel. However, there are only a few simulation traning software on the market designed specifically for protection devices. And most of them mainly focus on the simulation of protective actions instead of protection principles, logic circuits or verification of protection devices.In response to this situation, this paper presents and develops a power system protection training simulation system based on component technique. The system uses a graphical modeling method which allows the trainees to build and edit a main wiring diagram of power grid, also allows them to setup protection or apply faults. In order to make the trainees understand the protection devices better, and make the training system more general, the system is not based on particular protection device but protection principles. Mathematical models of protective relay are broken down into model components using component technique, so that the trainees can make up their own protection device and logic circuits. The system takes the fault data and software simulation data as the data source, and analyzes the fault information deeply to display the operation characteristics and logic flow visually and dynamically. The system will not only visually present the intermediate fault calculations and results, which are not open to users originally, but also make analysis and comparisons of operation characteristics of protection devices under different fault conditions and operation characteristics of different protection components or devices under the same fault condition. So that the trainees can understand how the protection device works both fully and deeply. The system has a graphical operating environment. Its user interface is concise, its output is clear, which provides a powerful tool for the deep understanding in the operation characteristics of protection device. The system is applied for training power-utility personnel, and provides an effective way to improve their skills in operating and maintaining microcomputer protection device.
