With the increasing popularity of computers and the rapid development of communications technology, causes the family equipment to enter the intelligent and the network gradually. From the most common building visual intercom system to the home security systems, intelligent lighting system, family definition multimedia systems, etc., have no doubt reflects the smart home in people's lives play an increasingly important role.EIB (European Installation Bus) is the most widely used in industry standards and product standards in the field of electrical wiring, and it occupies an important position in the smart home. With the improvement of living standards, the EIB system originally only used in the exhibition hall, banks, commercial and industrial buildings, now has gradually been applied to residential buildings and private apartments and other small buildings. However for many electronic system integrators who want to realize intelligent home, encountered a difficult problem in the course of integrated the EIB system into their systems, namely how to achieve the communication between EIB system and other systems, such as air-conditioning system, central control system.Then we need an EIB gateway to carries out the mutual conversion between the EIB protocol and other protocol in order to meet customer needs, so the EIB gateway has great significance to promote the integration and applications of smart home. Because the market is basically no such products, the paper is presented the design of embedded EIB gateway according to the market's strong demand.First the paper introduces the concept of smart home and its development status, and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of the typical smart home bus at current home and abroad, then the EIB bus protocol is thoroughly analyzed, including the EIB topology, EIB bus components, EIB system communication, EIB communication models and packet structure, EIB standard data types, followed the external communications mechanism of EIB is in-depth analysis, and presents using the serial PEI-16 communications as the external communications applications of the EIB gateway. The theoretical basis of this communication program, the EIB gateway is designed and developed based on the 1-7188 embedded controller module. This EIB gateway quickly achieved the EIB protocol conversion between the other protocols. And it also has the function of EIB bus monitoring. It has a good sense of marketing and applications. Currently, it has been used in actual project.
