The ship design process is a complicated engineering problem which has a long design cycle, with high technology, dealing with several fields of science and technology including hydrodynamics and structures. With the rapid improvement of computer technology, the theories of various disciplines have been vigorously developed, so people can adopt a more precise model to conduct analysis and design, which makes considerable progress among all disciplines. But however, the development of the overall ship design is relatively slow compared with the other subjects. In the past few years, the serial design of ship had played a very important role in the development of technology for ship design technology, although it was a traditional one. Whereas, the serial design did not take into account the coupled synergies among the various subjects and split the interaction between the different disciplines, then, it could not be able to get the integrated optimum solution, what more it was inefficiency and time-consuming. In the face of the problems encountered in traditional ship design, bringing in the multidisciplinary design optimization technology would be a modern tendency.MDO is a methodology which makes full use of exploration and collaboration in the coordination mechanism to design complex engineering systems and subsystems. The interaction between various factors can be taken full account of and the interest of all parties with a more harmonious design result can also be coordinated with Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO). Ship design optimization has obvious characteristics of multi-disciplinary, it will have a very broad space for development and practical significance while MDO is introduced into the design process. (CO) is an effective multi-disciplinary optimization method. Its design idea is consistent with the ship design organizational forms. This study mainly discusses the collaborative algorithm framework and its application in the ship design, in details, as follows:1. Give a comprehensive analysis of the four commonly used MDO algorithms, provide a description of the structure and their advantages or disadvantages of each algorithmic. 2. Specific to the characteristics of the overall ship design, the ship design process can be divided into 10 independent subjects as ship type,weight,capacity,rapidity,stability,seakeeping,maneuverability, general arrangement,structure and economy. On the behalf of general arrangement and structure, only to analyze the theoretical elaboration, while in the other disciplines, there going to establish a mathematical model, make a clear design variable and state variable, and clarify the coupled relationship between interdisciplinary of various disciplines based on the subject analysis.3. Taking advantage of the collaborative optimization framework to establish a mathematical model about the ship collaborative optimization and realize an optimization of a tanker design with the help of the business software iSIGHT. In the process, each discipline realized the optimization concurrently, and obtained a satisfactory optimization result, indicating that CO method can be applied in the ship MDO and other complex systems.Through the study of this paper, we can see that MDO has great potential in improving the overall optimization of ship design technology. In addition, this work can also be a technological foundation for the ship design of the multidisciplinary design optimization methods for further application.
