The study is about the planning history of ancient chinese local cities, contains a case study and a regional study. The case study takes the ancient city of Mianyang as a sample, summary the features in planning of ancient city of Mianyang by analyzing its location, environment, form, structure of streets and function layout. Regional research include ancient cities around lower Hanjiang river along with ancient city of Mianyang, summary the commonalities in trends of location,size, street layout, patterns of walls and traditional landscape thoughts By comparing the shape and layout of these ancient cities in Ming and Qing DynastiesBy geographical and historical factors, the ancient city of Mianyang about fortification in AD 400 in the lower reaches of Han River, and formed a feature that "near water" and not "rely on water" in the site. Influenced by the dual pattern of the surrounding landscape and ceremony ideology, form the walls of the ancient city of Mianyang showed "respect for the West Peel East, radius of integration" features. Due to special construction process and the historical background, the shape of ancient city of Mianyang had a process of change that from the "9 gates" to "5 gate" in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which led to structural changes in the city streets to the Cross Street structure from the checkerboard layout of the first, and formed a feature in the distribution of "a trackless gates" in ancient city of Mianyang in Qing Dynasty. Meanwhile, been affected by the development of commerce along the Han River, throught aggregation from scattered to concentrated, the scale of blocks outside the wall had been greater than the inside of ancient city of Mianyang in middle Qing Dynasty, while achieved some kind of "beyond the river development" in smaller level, and formed a spatial pattern which has the characteristics of Hubei region. As the ancient citis built in the same period, the same region, Anlu, Hanyang, Mianyang, Tianmen, Qianjiang and Hanchuan were subject to the direct impact of the Han River in history, And reflect the regional characteristics of urban planning such as Trend from the "near water" to "rely on water" in the city site, flood control function represent in morphology and material of walls, and traditional landscape thoughts about "capacity mountains to avoid water" and so on.
