In this paper, based on a certain edge beam frame of a heavy-duty truck, the finite element model in shell elements is established by using Hypermesh. The stiffness and modal characters of the frame are gained qualitatively through static and dynamic analysis in order to test and verify the design. Furthermore, one modern CAE optimization technology——topological optimization method based on FEM is employed to redesign the topological structure of the frame. Some static and dynamic information about the optimized frame is gained to have the best frame structure and give some instructive suggestion for the design of new frame. At the same time, this paper explores preliminarily the topological optimization method in the truck frames and has positive impacts on the efficiency and level of frame design in our country.It is showed in the research that the frame strength can meet the design requirement. Through the modal characters of the frame, the dynamic characters are satisfied with the design requirement.It is also shown from the performance parameters of the optimized body are improved to varying degrees except the mass, such as the torsional strength reduced greatly and the first torsion frequency increased, etc. It's doable to employ the topological optimization technology based on FEM into the design of truck frame structure. The overall performance of the frame can be enhanced greatly by using the technology. As for the mass added, the lightweight design can be made through dimension and shape optimation.
