This paper discussed the effect of different substrates on cucumber growth and development, yield and quality. The different substrates consisted of organic materials corn straw rice straw and turf and inorganic materials slag, pearl precipice in the light of different proportion. The results indicated that B treatment, which was made of slag, corn straw and pearl precipice in the light of volume ratio of 6:3:1, was the best compared with the soil culture. Both early yield and total yield were thehighest among the treatments. Cucumber plant height stem thick, dry and freshweight of shoot and root, root volume and bleeding also were the best in the substrates. NR reactivity was many times of CK, root POD reactivity decreased by 22.4% than CK. Quality was obviously improved, nitrate content in cucumber fruits was the lowest, decreased by 28.4% than CK, Vc content was the highest, increased by 27.3%than CK. Next was I) treatment that was made of slag and corn straw according to volume ratio of 2:1. Its all indexes were also the better. Its yield was second only to B treatment and increased by 8.9% than CK. Its nitrate content in cucumber fruits decreased by 10.4% than CK. So we selected out B and I) treatments whose organic material was corn straw, they made plant grow healthier yield increased and quality improved( especially making nitrate content in cucumber fruits decrease). They provided organic soilless culture with a new method and means. Meanwhile, we determined and analyzed the physical and chemical characters of the substrates. We also analyzed the reason that B and D treatments yield was increased. This paper also discussed the outlook of organic soilless culture and how to scientifically apply fertilizers.
