External appearance is an important aspect reflecting flue-cured tobacco quality, while color is key factor for external appearance. In this study. CIE1976-L*a*b* was used as external color system for tobacco leaf color quantification description . The color indexes of 41 samples were measured and analyzed from different point of view. Pointed out the color characters of each location .compared chroma difference .demonstrated the inaccuratencss of personal color determination, analyzed correlation among cach color index and internal chemical components and smoking panel evaluation quality.The main results arc as following:1, Recurrence and stability study of color measure showed that this color measure technique is basically stable and reliable.2, Chromaticity index showed that. the quantification indexes of color of different color group with same position and location, color group with same location but different position, leaf character of same grade from different region were all different. Color quantification characters of cach location were put forward. Personal color qualitative determination was inaccurate.3, study of relationship among chroma indexes and main chemical components showed that, total sugar, nicotine, total nitrogen, protein etc. were significantly correlated with each chromaticity indexes. Correlation among reduced sugar, starch and color numerical value were not significant.4,Chromaticity indexes were not correlated with aroma type in smoking panel evaluation quality, but highly correlated with industry indexes aroma quality .taste etc. . correlation with total score were consistent with production practice.The innovation of this study:1 , Statistics method was used to compare the differences among samples, which is an supplement for the qualitative quantitative numerical compare method used previously.2, Chroma indexes differences of different locations in same region were analyzed.3 , A good many of color indexes were screened. For single sample, five index L*.a*.b*.C*and H is enough, while additional E* is needed for multiple sample compare.4, Original ideas of relationship among color indexes and chemical components, smoking panel evaluation quality were put forward.Through this study, supplied valuable references for tobacco classification standard . tobacco leaf quality database, computer color identification system study etc.
