Pinus massoniana Lamb, Pinus elliottii Engelm, Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. is an important pine used for wood, distributed all over the southern and northern part of China. Dendrolimus punctatus Walker is a serially destructive insect to P. massoniana. In this paper, the relative amounts and enantiomeric compositions of monopene hydrocarbons in needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb, Pinus tabulaeformis Carr., Pinus elliottii Engelm have been determined and compared by dynamic head-space collector - chiral capillary gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the first time. The relative amounts of (-)-α- pinene in the volatiles of the needles of Pinus massoniana Lamb was the highest, are 55.50%. But (-)-β-pinene (43.38%) was highest in the volatiles of Pinus elliottii Engelm. The forty-two compounds (monoterpenes, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, oxygenated molecules, primary or tertiary alcohols et al.) of mechanical cut and herbivore infested needles of Pinus massoniana were identified and the relative amounts of each compound and main chiral monoterpene hydrocarbons was analyzed during a successive 96 h examination. The relative percentages of tricycle, a-pinene, camphene were higher than the healthy control pinus. But the amounts of β-pinene, β-myrcene, limonene descent after the pinus damaged. The herbivore-induced bornyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene, [s-(E, E)]-methyl-5-methylene-8-(1-methylethyl)-1,6-cyclodecadiene are different from that of artificially damage-induced.The relative amounts of the artificial damage-induced and herbivore-induced (-) -a-pinene were far from higher than the healthy control. The emission rate of (-)-β-pinene were lower than that of healthy control. The delayed response of Dendrolimus punctatus-induced α- pinene, β-pinene in low-grade and high-grade damaged pinus were different, but the amounts of alpher- caryophyllene, beta-caryophyllene were higher than that of heathy pinus. The volatiles of pinus were not transformed and metabolized by Dendrolimus punctatus.
