The Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is the ecological zone of transition between agricultural planting area and the pastoral area connection in our country. It is also called half-agricultural and half-pastoral area or the ecological ecotone. It holds the important strategic status in economy, the social development and the environmental protection aspects of our country. The Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry has been investigated in the periods of the sixth, the seventh and the eighth five-year plans, and has gained some results, but the geographic distribution question of the Chinese ecotone between fanning and animal husbandry is always not solved. In order to solve the question above, according to the goal for the geographic distribution research exploration of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry, the predecessors' research and experience about the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry are summarized and taken up. By the related ecological index factors, the quantitative investigation of the geographic distribution of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry has been accomplished and the geographic distribution of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry has been described based on the advanced GIS technology through the computation and the simulation. It will offer the reference for the further research on the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry in the future.Firstly, nine ecological index factors correlating with the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry have been selected in this study. Secondly, the weight of ecological index factors has been determined by the analytic hierarchy process. Thirdly, the membership functions of nine ecological index factors have been established by fuzzy logic theory, respectively. Finally, the ecological index factors evaluating models about the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry have been established by the suitability model about the forage growth;Meanwhile, The spatial databases of nine ecological index factors have been established according to the GIS spatial interpolation module, and then according to the spatial overlay analysis of the ecological index factors, the geographic distribution of the Chinese ecotone between fanning and animal husbandry was simulated using the spatial computation of the evaluating models which are established by the ecological index factors. Ultimately the geographic distribution map about the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is formed. The results were as following:1. The quantitative concept of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry: the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is the subordination degree which is between the crops in the planting area, the forage in thepastoral area (it is mainly forage) and their habitat factors. It reflected whether some characteristic of ecological index factors are in accord with the characteristic of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry in the geographic region.2. According to the comprehensive and sequential classification of grassland, the ecological suitability of the forage (crops) growth and the correlation between the biology characteristic of the forage (crops) and the ecological index factors, the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is determined. The ecological index factors: annual sunshine hour( / ), > 0°C annual accumulated temperature ( 6 ), annual mean temperature( T ), annual precipitation( P ),annual relative humidity( R ), altitude( H ), extreme maximum temperature( 7]^ ), extreme lowest temperature( TmN ), frost-free days( D), total nine ecological index factors.3. The ecological index factors evaluating models of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry. The ecological index factors evaluating models of the ecotone between farming and animal husbandry in Northern China:SNonh = 0.0325/ + 0.1565e + 0.1225r + 0.285,, + 0.1015^ +0.1465,,+0.0415r +0.0525r + 0.075n" 'MAX 'MIN uThe ecological index factors evaluating models of the ecotone between farming and animal husbandry in Southern China:ssou,h = 0.2425, + 0.1335e + 0.0985r + 0.0725, + 0.0725* +0.2165w+0.0335r +0.0425r +0.0925n" 'MAX 'MIS u4. The spatial databases about nine ecological index factors of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry are established, namely: The annual sunshine hour, > 0°C annual accumulated temperatures, the annual mean temperature, the annual precipitation, the annual relative humidity, the altitude, the extreme maximum temperature, the extreme lowest temperature, the frost-free days.and one spatial database of administrative regionalizing.5. The spatial geographic distribution map of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is simulated;this distribution map has the characteristics as follow:(1) The distribution of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is a narrow strip along the population boundary (Heihe in Heilongjiang Province - Tengchong in Yunnan Province) which was proposed by Hu Huanyong in 1938.(2) The ecotone between farming and animal husbandry in Southern China is taking the vertical distribution as the characteristic.6. It is the first time that the geographic distribution of the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry is computed and simulated quantitatively based on GIS technology. Not only is the new direction of the research on the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry initiated, but also is the research on the Chinese ecotone between farming and animal husbandry pushed to a new high.
