Eperythrozoon ovis (E.ovis) is an extracellular parasite on the surface of red blood cells, blood plasma and bone marrow that causes icteroanemia and poor growth performance in feeder sheep. In the present study,a large number of blood samples were examined by direct blood microscopic observation, Giemsa stain of peripheral blood smear . Morphologic features of E ovis was further confirmed in light microscope and transmission electron microscope(TEM)observation .This experiment was conducted using 1 year old sheep infected with eperythrozoon ovis naturally .We carried out a series of tests:RBC count, Hb, PCV, superoxide dismutase(SOD),ATPase and Red cell immune function,Acidα-Naphthyl acetate esterase assay(ANAE) in E.ovis-infected blood. The purposes of this study were to explored to the proposed pathogenesis of eperythrozoonosis of sheep. The results showed:Stained a deep purple colour, but with a bluish tinge by Giemsa procedure. The most common forms of E.ovis seen by TEM were coccoid and ring forms. The ring form had an aperture. There was electron-lucent area in the cytoplasma. Two primers were synthesized based on the conservative sequence of Eperythrozoon ovis 16S rRNA. A 1169bp fragment was amplified by using polymerase chain reaction. The reaction indicated that PCR is quick ,sensitive and special. It is a effective way to be used to diagnose Eperythrozoon ovis from the whole level.Drug sensitive tests suggested that berenil and oxytetracycline were effective in treating this disease.
