Chamaecytisus palmensis is a kind of evergreen legume shrub originated from La Palma of Canary Islands in the northwestern coast of Africa. It was introduced in 2002 from Australia and has been made many trials including seed germination, seed breeding, container breeding and cutting propagation, over-winter and so on in Dingxi, Tianshui and Wudu three districts of Gansu province in 2002-2005.The seed determined results indicated: C. palmensis seed had 63% hard seeds and lipidic seed-coat, and its 1000-seed weight was 23.92 g; The seed accelerating germination results showed that the effects of 6 germination accelerating methods on C. palmensis seeds were different. Among them, the effect of sand-paper attrition treatment was best, the second were temperature-changing treatment and thick sulfuric acid, boil water treatment was worse, sodium carbonate and washing powder treatments were placed in the middle, whereas the effects of sodium carbonate and washing powder treatments were moderate, but safe and practical; The seed viability test result showed that the viable seeds accounted for 82% of all treated seeds, and its germination rate was 94% in lab. The field germination test showed that the imbibing and budding seed had the fastest germination speed, the seed imbibing but no budding had moderate germination speed and poorer germination rate, whereas the hard seed had slower germination speed and best germination rate. And its average germination rate was 92.5% of three types of seed. C. palmensis's suitable sowing depth was 2~3 cm and mulching sowing could increase its germination rate and speed, and the container breeding was the best selection of three breeding methods. Its greenwood cutting had a higher callus producing rate of average 60.0% and lower rooting rate of average 20.5%. And the rooting rate of ABT treated plant is better than that of control plant, 10 hour ABT treatment is better than 2 hour treatment; upper and middle sect of shoot is better than lower sect.C. palmensis was a kind of fast-growing tree species,.and it had a"s"figure growth curve in height and basal diameter. Its annual seedling had an average over 1 m height and about 1 cm basal diameter. Among its three types of seedling, the cutting seedling had the fastest growth, the second was container seedling and the field sowing seedling was worse. Its annual seedling grew better in Dingxi district but poor in Wudu, whereas over 1-year-old seedling grew better in Wudu district too. Its annual seedling could naturally live through winter in Wudu but could not in both districts of Dingxi and Tianshui.The nutrition and photosynthesis determination results indicated: the branch and foliage of C. palmensis had rich nutrition component such as protein, mineral substance, vitamin and so on. It had a higher utilization rate of solar energy and smaller depletion rate of soil water just because of its higher photosynthesis rate and lower transpiration rate. Compared to the local shrub species of(Sophora davidii),(Hippophae rhamnoides)with the same age, C. palmensis had the faster growth, more biomass and more dry mass accumulation and it was a kind of fine tree species for forestation and forage source in arid area.
