Geranium herb, with an effectiveness of clearing away the heat evil, expelling superficial evils, and activating blood circulation, has a remarkable inhibition on Asia influenza virus a etc. It has a great value of utilization and a wide perspective for drug development. Because of this, assaying of tannin and total flavonoids of active components from Geranium carolinianum L. and toxicology of its alcohol extract were studied initially.1 The preparation of alcohol extract of Geranium carolinianum L.By the percolation method, dried Geranium carolinianum L. was extracted with 95% ethanol. Then the extract was dried and the solvent was removed completely in vacuum desiccator.1g alcohol extract equaled 25 g dried medicinal herb.2 Assaying of tannin and total flavonoids in the alcohol extract. The chemical constituents in the alcohol extract were analyzed in advance by the special colorable reaction and the precipitation reaction of them. Then based on the results and as gallic acid and quercetin were as the standard substances, total flavonoids and tannin in the alcohol extract, extracted by the percolation and ultrasound method, were assayed by the special colorable reaction combining with spectrophotometry, and they were converted into the percentual contents of the dried medicinal herb. Total flavonoids in Geranium carolinianum L., which were extracted by the percolation and ultrasound method, were 0.0340% and 0.0367% respectively, and the tannins were 0.091% and 0.113% respectively.3 Toxicity test. The test on the acute toxicity of alcohol extract of Geranium carolinianum L. in Kunming mice showed that any toxicity was not discovered as 10g/kg.bw body of the alcohol extract was drenched into mices, and the maximum tolerated dose was more than 30g/kg.bw. So it could be thought that the alcohol extract of Geranium carolinianum L. is safe in fact. In the study of subchronic oral toxity, no toxicities on the clinical manifestation, blood physiology, blood biochemistry, and the index of organ pathology, etc were discovered, and toxicity effects on micropathology were not almost discovered as 0mg/kg, 400mg/kg, 1300mg/kg and 4500mg/kg of the alcohol extract was drenched into white rates respectively. It showed that it is not almost toxicity and is safe as the alcohol extract of Geranium carolinianum L. was drenched into white rates at a long time.
