Objective To investigate the changes of serum growth hormone (GH),insulin growth factor-1(IGF-1) ,angiotensinâ…¡(Angâ…¡), nitric oxide (NO) in patients with essential hypertension of different grade and class and correlations among them. Hypertensives with heart failure or cerebral infarction were studied too. Methods The levels of serum GH, IGF-1, Angâ…¡and NO in 105 patients with essential hypertension (45 patients of class 1 hypertension, including 13 patients of grade 1, 16 patients of grade 2, 13 patients of grade 3. 20 patients of class 2. 40 patients of class 3, including 10 patients of heart failure and 10 patients of cerebral infarction, other 20 patients) and 40normal individuals were determined by radioimmunoassay or nitrate reductase method, correlations analysis were done among them. Results GH,IGF-1,Angâ…¡ levels in patients with essential hpertension were significantly higher than those of normal control (p<0.05). No level lower than that of normal (p<0.05).which were closely correlated with the clinical severity of hypertension. But in patients with heart failure or cerebral infarction, the levels of GH and IGF-1 decreased(p<0.05). GH levels is positively correlated with IGF-1 in hypetensives (r=0.768,p<0.01). GH and IGF-1 levels are positively correlated with Angâ…¡(r=0.649,p<0.05;r=0.537,p<0.05).there is no correlation between IGF-1 and NO,GH and NO, IGF-1 and NO. Conclusions 1. circulating GH, IGF-1, Angâ…¡ levels increasesd patients with essential hypertension and NO decreased .And the levels were closely correlated with the clinical severity of hypertension. they may be good indexes for judging clinical severity of hypertension and involved in the occurence and development of essential hypertension. 2. GH and IGF-1 levels are positively correlated with Angâ…¡ in hypetensives. they maybe interact and be involved in the occurence and development of essential hypertension. 3. Patients in class 3 hypertensives with heart failure or cerebral infarction, the levels of GH and IGF-1 decreased.
